Omitting Murdoch mischief-making phrases, here is the gist of today’s Times article
It is reported that Ministers have authorised, without parliamentary approval, £85 million for the development of a new warhead as well as work to upgrade Trident’s nuclear devices.
The work on a new Mark 4A warhead has been undertaken at the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Aldermaston. It will potentially allow Britain to choose a wider range of targets by giving greater control over the height of detonation.
The Ministry of Defence denied that it was secret, saying the work was announced in the 2015 strategic defence and security review. It also refused to answer questions on the cost of the overall Trident programme — warheads, missiles and submarines — on the grounds that the information is classified.
To date, £3 billion has been spent on replacing the Trident deterrent.
David Cameron is being urged to hold the Trident vote immediately after the EU referendum to reunite a Tory party bitterly divided by Brexit and exploit Labour’s divisions over the issue.
